Efflorescence
Seen as white furry crystalline deposits on new plaster and cement. Occurs as the surface dries out.
Erosion
The wearing away of the top surface of a coat by, for example, chalking or the abrasive action of wind-borne grit.
Etching
Cleaning and roughening a surface using a chemical agent prior to painting in order to increase adhesion.
