National painting and decorating contractor, Bagnalls, has given the Kentish Town City Farm a fresh new makeover as part of the Johnstone’s Trade Community Spirit competition.

Kentish Town City Farm is an urban farm activities charity, based in North London and, following a nationwide call for a deserving cause in the 2017/18 Community Spirit competition, won a £10,000 redecoration makeover.

The farm works with the local community to help people connect with animals, nature and the environment by providing an extensive programme of activities. These include equine care programmes and a young farmer scheme, as well as structured groups and activities for people with disabilities.

The farm was in need of redecoration in various rooms throughout the building and, after winning the competition, the team was introduced to the Johnstone’s Trade Painter of the Year, Bagnalls. In line with its ongoing local community and charity work, Bagnalls took on the role of completing the redecoration at the farm.

Gus Alston, Director at Kentish Town Farm, explained: “Everyone at the farm was incredibly happy when we were announced as the winner of the competition. The building hadn’t been decorated for more than ten years and was in desperate need of a facelift. The team at Bagnalls have done an amazing job – the building looks brighter and more welcoming than ever, and we can’t thank them enough for the work they’ve done for us.”

The Bagnalls team painted the main activity room, reception area, corridor and staircase as part of the project, using feature colours to add vibrancy and a more contemporary feel to the different areas.

Throughout the project, the main challenge for the team was to ensure a safe working environment was maintained, as the centre remained open whilst the redecoration work took place. This meant a thorough planning process was agreed, and jobs were carried out to fit around the visiting school parties and regular pottery classes being held.

Jonny Miller, Senior Site Supervisor at Bagnalls, commented: “We were more than happy, as the Community Spirit Award winners, to support this great charity.  Although the painting itself was quite straight forward, working around the farm’s visitors added a degree of complexity but the farm’s volunteers and Gus helped wherever they could to facilitate our works. We really enjoyed our week at the Kentish Town City Farm and we hope our small contribution has made a big impact.”

Johnstone’s Trade supplied the paint used in the project, including Acrylic Durable Matt. The premium matt finish and outstanding durability of the coating made it perfect to withstand the daily wear and tear of the high-traffic areas within the building.
