Johnstone's Adds Colour To 'Green' School

As one of North Wales’ first eco-friendly schools, the state of the art Ysgol Y Graig Primary School in Llangefni, Angelsey boasts a variety of sustainable design features including a colourful eco-friendly paint specification from leading trade brand Johnstone’s.

To meet the stringent environmental and maintenance requirements of the new school, it was vital that the paint products specified were not only fully compliant with the latest VOC 2010 legislation but would also provide a hard-wearing durable finish for use in such a high-traffic environment.  Offering an extensive selection of VOC 2010 compliant products, colour options and innovative solutions, various paints and coatings from Johnstone’s Advanced Technology, Trade Professional and Woodworks ranges were specified and applied by Painting and Decorating Association Member R. M. Owen.

The striking blue, red, yellow and green exterior facades of the school have been complemented by an equally vibrant interior colour scheme that was devised with help from Johnstone’s Colour Advisory Department and created through the use of Johnstone’s market leading tinting machine.

Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt and Acrylic Eggshell were specified for the school’s internal walls and ceilings, with Johnstone’s Quick Dry Satin Woodstain used to give the interior woodwork a hardwearing clear finish and Joncryl Water Based Primer Undercoat applied where needed.  The products, all of which are water based and boast a low VOC content, were selected for their eco-friendly formulations and the low-odour quick drying properties that make them ideally suited for application in a modern school environment.

Richard Owen from R. M. Owen comments: “This is the first school of its kind in North Wales and we worked closely with both the main contractor Wynne Construction and Johnstone’s to ensure that the interior paint specification was in keeping with the project’s innovative eco-friendly design.  Johnstone’s extensive product range provided a wide choice of paints and coatings that successfully met the specific environmental and performance criteria that the project required. The end result is a state of the art school that boasts a creative colour scheme and high quality paint finish created exclusively from low VOC content products.”

In addition to the use of Johnstone’s paints, the school’s eco-friendly design also includes the use of locally sourced sustainable building materials, innovative turf nature roof, rain water recycling, solar panels and wind turbines.
