The Salvation Army Citadel in Aberdeen has been given a new look and a new lease of life thanks to an ambitious £3.4m refurbishment programme that featured the extensive use Johnstone’s Advanced Technology Acrylic Durable Matt emulsion.

The landmark building that dates back to 1896 and was once used as an army barracks and a castle, now boasts a colourful and modern new interior that comprises fully equipped function rooms, offices, a dedicated computer suite and a glass fronted internet café. Combining contemporary facilities with carefully restored period features, the refurbishment of The Citadel also saw professional painting contractors McLaren & Co complete the redecoration of The Worship Hall.  Boasting a high quality paint finish in the classic colours of blue and white, the 300-seat auditorium’s new décor has been designed to perfectly complement the hall’s existing stained glass windows.

The challenging project required a paint system that would meet the dual requirement of achieving creative colour schemes and a high quality, low maintenance finish.  Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt emulsion proved to be the ideal choice and in addition to restoring the Citadel to its former glory, will provide the building with a long-lasting finish for years to come.

Ralph Skene from McLaren & Co adds: “We worked alongside other specialist trades and craftsmen over a two year period to restore the historic Citadel and create a stunning new interior that complements the existing architectural design. By using Johnstone’s paints throughout, the new internal décor features a striking colour scheme that suits both the new modern elements of the building and also the original period features.”

Specifically developed for use in areas where a hardwearing and highly durable paint coating is required, Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt emulsion boasts a special robust washable formula that enables surfaces such as walls and ceilings be regularly cleaned and maintenance redecoration programmes considerably extended. Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt has been stringently tested and achieved with ease the standards of Class 1 of the ISO 11198 scrub test. Ideally suited to even the most challenging of environments. The matt finish provides exceptional coverage and as it retains a true matt finish  it helps to  disguise minor imperfections and ensure remedial and redecoration work can be carried out easily and without disruption to others.

The Salvation Army Citadel project was one of the three overall winners at the 2008 Johnstone’s Painter of the Year award.
