The UK’s most visited shopping centre, The Bullring in Birmingham, has been given a winning makeover thanks to an ambitious refurbishment programme that featured a wide array of products and technical services from leading paint manufacturer Johnstone’s.
Located in the heart of the UK’s second largest city, the 1.2 million sq ft shopping centre underwent a full internal and external redecoration by national painting contractors Roy Hankinson Ltd. Members of Johnstone’s Technical Advisory Department worked together with Roy Hankinson Ltd to specify products that would allow work to be undertaken with little disruption to the centre’s trading, while ensuring it was completed within deadline.
With minimal disruption to trading proving a critical factor to the client, it was decided that Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt Emulsion would be used to provide a quick drying low odour solution that was touch dry each morning following the nightly application.
Products used in accordance with the recommendations of Johnstone’s Technical Advisory Department included Stormshield Pliolite Based Masonry Finish, Woodworks Opaque Wood Finish and Eggshell and were specified for their suitability for the myriad of substrates the decorators were challenged with.
As well as providing bespoke product specifications, Johnstone’s colour team were on hand to provide effective colour solutions for the project. The centre utilises an array of bespoke colours which were matched exactly by the state-of-the-art tinting facilities available at Johnstone’s Leyland Decorating Centres.
Clare Winter, Johnstone’s Specification Market Manager, said: “For such a large scale project to be carried out, on time, to budget and with no disruption to centre trading, was an exceptional achievement by Roy Hankinson Ltd.
“Johnstone’s products played an integral part in ensuring that the centre could remain trading throughout the project with minimal disruption. This was achieved by specifying low odour, water based products that offered quick drying solutions. Combining this with unrivalled support from the local Johnstone’s Leyland Decorating Centre, who ensured prompt product delivery each night, this is a project that everyone involved with can feel very proud of.”
Matthew Hickman, Operations Manager from the Hankinson Painting Group said: “We received first-class support from Johnstone’s Technical Advisory Department on this project, as well as from staff at the local Decorating Centre. Using the tinting machine they were able to match the paint to the existing colour with minimum fuss and also provide ‘just in time delivery’ prior to each night shift.”
