Why has my Woodstain begun to flake, discolour or wash off?

As with all timber products there are a number of issues to consider prior to application.

These products are designed and formulated to adhere to timber surfaces by being absorbed into the structure and fibres of the wood being treated.

Anything that prevents this process from occurring can result in a significant reduction in performance.

There are a number of issues to look out for before application can start.

Ensure the surface is clean, and free from loose unstable material.

Timbers are prone to high levels of underlying moisture especially after the winter months.

New timbers can contain high levels of preservatives, these must be allowed to fully dry and cure.

Any organic growth must not only be removed but treated to prevent re-growth.

Apply the coating in suitable weather conditions avoiding cold or damp days.

Old weathered or denatured timber must be fully removed.

Failure to follow these few simple steps can lead to retarded drying, loss of sheen, flaking, colour change, even washing off

It is imperative that any system applied be it simple shed and fence to decking stain even Performance Woodstains are allowed to bond to a suitably prepared surface and applied in conditions which will achieve the best out of any coating.
