It’s official –when it comes to offering professional painters and decorators the whitest matt emulsion, leading trade paint brand Johnstone’s has shown its true colours.

As in-house testing can sometimes be a whitewash, leading paint manufacturer Johnstone's has been subjected to stringent independent blind tests and the results prove that Johnstone's matt emulsions outperform competitor brand Dulux in the key area of whiteness

Owing to the fact that white is a highly reflective colour, it can be used to great effect to create a sense of light and space but as true whiteness can sometimes be subjective, Johnstone’s believes that testing under controlled conditions is the only effective way to compare the whiteness of different matt emulsions. Rather than relying on anecdotal evidence or opinion, the independent blind tests confirm Johnstone’s claims about its products performance and no doubt the results will come as no surprise to the thousands of painting contractors across the UK who have seen the difference for themselves.

The independent whiteness test compared the equivalent matt emulsions of both Johnstone’s and Dulux to find which products offered the greatest levels of whiteness when tested in accordance with ASTM E313:2003. The following product combinations in the whitest colour options were tested; Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt and Dulux Vinyl Matt, Johnstone’s Flat Matt and Dulux Flat Matt, Johnstone’s Acrylic Durable Matt and Dulux Diamond Matt and finally, Johnstone’s Jonmat and Dulux Supermatt. The results of the tests proved that each of the Johnstone’s matt products gave whiter results than the Dulux equivalents.

Johnstone’s success in the whiteness tests comes hot on the heels of another independent blind test which, carried out in accordance with the official quality standard BS EN ISO 2814:2006, also proved that the Johnstone’s matt emulsions tested give greater levels of opacity than the Dulux’s equivalent products.

Johnstone’s official spokesperson Martijn Venema, comments:" Although there are various shades and tones of white available, we believe that white matt emulsion should be just that as professional contractors need to be confident that the white matt emulsion that they choose will not have yellow or grey undertones. Confirming what many professional contractors already know from using our products, we are delighted that we are now able to site with independent confirmation that Johnstone’s matt emulsions tested outperform Dulux in the key areas of whiteness and opacity. No doubt these results will give both professional contractors and specifiers plenty of food for thought when it comes to selecting matt emulsions for their next project."
