Johnstone’s Trade’s commitment to delivering sustainable paint solutions continues after a trio of its products received coveted third-party verification from BRE Global, the certification arm of building science centre BRE.

Its Acrylic Satin, Professional Gloss and Aqua Water Based Gloss products now all carry the EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) verification. Johnstone’s is the first decorative coating manufacturer to receive certification which complies with the European Standard EN 15804, and a number of additional core products are set to achieve their EPD certification in the coming months.

An EPD is a standardised way of assessing the full environmental impact of a product through its lifespan from raw materials and manufacturing to application, use and disposal. Johnstone’s verified EN 15804 EPD allows architects to accurately compare competing materials from an environmental perspective and enables contractors and building owners to comply with government rules.

EPDs are independently tested to strict standards to ensure the underlying data, data handling and EPD itself are consistently reliable. The credibility of an EPD which meets EN 15804 gives specifiers and architects peace of mind that they are specifying products in keeping with environmental standards set by BREEAM and LEED.

Helen Tiplady, specification marketing manager at Johnstone’s Trade, said: “Unquestionably, we are in the midst of a movement towards the design and construction of the most sustainable buildings the UK has ever seen. The Government’s insistence that all publically procured buildings must be BIM compliant by 2016 has been a significant driving force behind this. At Johnstone’s, we have never been more confident that our range provides architects and specifiers with products that will help them meet such sustainable targets.”

David Richardson, group director sustainable products at BRE commented: “Sustainability is something which we take very seriously so it’s great to see Johnstone’s Trade’s continued commitment to the environment. We are delighted to be able to award EPD certification for three Johnstone’s products now and look forward to many more in the coming months. It’s fantastic to know that we can all play our part in reducing the impact of the industry on the environment for a more sustainable future.”
