The regional heats of Johnstone’s 11th Young Painter of the Year competition have drawn to a close, with reigning champion Ryan Chamberlain securing his spot in the Grand Final.

Ryan claimed top spot at the Newcastle College heat and will be joined in the final at this year’s National Painting and Decorating Show by Alex Bussey, Martin Owen, Rhiann Iglesias, Zeekey Giles, Matthew MacDonald, Joel Mortlock and Daniel Holdcroft.

Heats took place across the spring at colleges across the UK, with the eight finalists now set to do battle for a prize haul worth up to £2000. This includes VIP tickets to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Final 2016 at Wembley and the prestigious Johnstone’s Painter of the Year black tie event. The other finalists will receive a special prize package, while every entrant into the heats walked away with an exclusive Fat Hog goody bag, packed with a variety of decorating tools.

To make it to this stage the finalists had to demonstrate a wide range of skills, including their ability to work from a detailed specification, which involved marking out a complex design and applying Johnstone’s Covaplus Vinyl Matt and Acrylic Durable Matt in light and bright colours. Technical experts from PPG Extra were on hand to oversee the students’ work and provide expert advice and guidance.
