Recognition at the Johnstone's Painter of the Year Competition represents the ultimate accolade in the profession for any decorating company. This year we celebrated the events 27th anniversary. The competition culminated in an awards ceremony at the luxurious De Vere Carden Park Hotel, near Chester. The work of 15 finalists was showcased during the evening's presentation. Each finalist was carefully selected following visits from technical representitives of the national judging panel to every one of our customers who entered a project. The criteria for entry was that either Johnstone's or Leyland paints were used on the project, that it had been completed in 2009 and that it was a job they were proud of.
Each job was reviewed to assess:
- The quality of the decorative finish
- The intricacy of the work involved
- The technical and logistical challenges presented by the project
Following the assessment of all the entries, the judging panel had the difficult task of whittling down the entries to a finalist list. Three winners and one Supreme Winner are then chosen from this list.
This year's event started with 'The Pliolite Golf Challenge' on Carden Park's golf course. The players battled it out for the 1st prize of a golfing trip to Spain this September, to join the winners of our prestigious PPG Golf Masters tournament which is currently taking place.
Golf attire was swapped for black tie in readiness for the evening's festivities and announcement of the winner was eagerly anticipated. The evening was compered by Greg Molyneux, Managing Director, PPG Architectural Coatings UK & Ireland and Steve Pocock, Commercial Director, PPG Architectural Coatings UK & Ireland. This year's awards evening format was different from previous, with the winners this year being chosen interactively on the night by guests in the audience. Each guest was given a key pad and scored all 15 finalist projects out of ten.
This year's winners were:
Supreme Winner - WD Davison and Sons with their work on Durham Crown Court
First Runner Up - Hugh Muirhead and Son with their work on Leith Police Station
Second Runner Up - McEwan Decor Ltd with their work on The European City Chambers
Each winner walked away with an award on the night in and in addition to the kudos and publicity attached to winning this prestigious competition, the Supreme Winner also won a brand new van, fully sign written! Big thanks goes to Northern Commercials who supplied the van for the winner.
