Hugh Muirhead and Son recieved the accolade of first runner up at the Painter of the Year event 2009 for their work on Leith Police Station, Edinburgh.
Formerly the Town Hall, this building designed by R & R Dickson is now Leith Police Station. The building is listed, therefore restoration work needed to be sympathetically completed, in keeping with the period of the property.
Many traditional features have been repainted, including columns, cornices, panelling and intricate ceiling moulds. Ceilings have been painstakingly repainted in a rich cream, with the relief features painted in white.
The intricately detailed wallcrest, a main feature to the interior of the building, has been skilfully repainted in greens and blues to match the stained glass window. The walls have been painted using shades of cream, and green to co-ordinate with the rest of the interior.
The project had to be carefully planned and executed to enable access to high ceilings, and operatives worked alongside other tradesmen such as builders and electricians. Hugh Muirhead have demonstrated a high level of skill with precise attention to detail to all areas, and are a worthy recipient of an award at Painter of the Year 2009.
