Johnstone’s Trade – leading paint brand and part of the global paint and coatings manufacturer PPG – recently hosted a colour-themed event as part of London Design Festival in collaboration with colour consultancy Calzada Fox.

‘FLOW | Shaping the Future Expressions of Architects and Designers’, which took place on 20 September at the Ace Hotel in Shoreditch, explored the intrinsic role that colour has in supporting human-centric design. Gathering some of the country’s top architects and designers, the event featured a series of exclusive talks and seminars.

Firstly, PPG’s principal colour consultant, Donna Taylor, introduced attendees to the must-know colour trends for 2020, before top design journalist Dominic Lutyens interviewed Laura Sanjuan, owner of Soda Studio, on her approach to colour when designing for urban projects. Rounding off the day, Justine Fox of Calzada Fox delivered a talk on using colour to shape our relationship with architecture and the built environment.
The event followed Johnstone’s Trade’s unveiling of the PPG Colour of the Year 2020, Chinese Porcelain PPG1160-6, as well as the wider Global Trends – all of which include an array of shades from the brand’s Voice of Colour palette.

“An overarching need for simplicity and escapism in the face of today’s fast-paced society was a key consideration when 35 PPG global colour stylists came together to decide this year’s overarching theme, ‘FLOW’”, said Donna at the event. “The theme is carried through three different trend stories – On The Move, At The Core and In The Know – which capture the current zeitgeist and key drivers in society, such as sustainability, the economy and technological innovation.”

FLOW was brought to life with a striking installation at the event, supported by modular furniture designer USM Modular Furniture. Each piece within the FLOW installation was designed to optimise proportional harmony and balance product performance innovation with the emotional resonance of colour.

The Colour of the Year 2020 in particular embodies this desire to find peace and harmony. A blend of cobalt and moody, ink blue, Chinese Porcelain PPG1160-6 evokes a sense of calm, while offering hopefulness. With blue hues being the easiest point of entry from neutrals to colour, this shade is set to be a popular choice across all areas of design.

Guests at the event also learned about Johnstone’s Trade’s newest product innovation. Johnstone’s Trade Perfect Matt has been developed with Smooth Layer technology to deliver a flawless, flat matt finish even in the darkest colours, to eliminate the impact of visible application marks, particularly in areas of critical lighting.
Donna added: “Through this event, we were able to bring together some of the country’s leading architects and designers to discuss the element that really brings projects to life – colour. It was fascinating to hear the guest speakers’ insights on all aspects of colour application, from its ability to trigger visceral, personal reactions, to its role in bringing entire communities together and even delivering on climate change objectives. It was also brilliant to hear how attendees plan on using our colour trends and Chinese Porcelain within their designs over the coming year.”

Carolina Calzada-Oliveira, co-founder of Calzada Fox, said: “It was great to see the engagement from architects and designers that came to the event to explore ideas about colour, wellbeing and future design.”
