Johnstone's Trade's commitment towards developing sustainable solutions for housing has been highlighted on the development of the recent Wienerberger e4 brick house (*TM).

The Wienerberger e4 brick house (*TM), located on BRE's Innovation Park in Watford, is an ambitious concept, intended to provide an answer to the mounting questions about the future of housing in the United Kingdom.

Johnstone's Trade's products were used exclusively throughout the house, largely thanks to their oustanding environmental attributes. Johnstone's Acrylic Durable Eggshell, Covaplus Vinyl Matt, Acrylic Durable Matt and Aqua Water-Based Undercoat and Gloss were all used and have all received Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) verification from BRE Global, the certification arm of building science centre BRE.

Johnstone's is the first decorative coating manufacturer to receive certification which complies with the European Standard EN 15804. Having this EPD verification allows architects to accurately compare competing materials from an environmental perspective and enables contractors and building owners to comply with government rules.

The concept for the house was developed to address the need for affordable, sustainable housing in the UK. Designed in conjunction with global engineering and design consultancy, ARUP, the e4 brick house (*TM) model focuses on the four pillars of Weinerberger's global e4 concept - energy, economy, environment and emotion.

Jason Metcalf, marketing director at Johnstone's, said: "As a brand that puts real emphasis on sustainability, we were delighted to be asked to be involved with this fantastic project. Our EPD verified products were the perfect solution to help the Weinerberger e4 brick house (*TM) meet its impressive ambition of changing the face of affordable and sustainable housing.

Richard Brown, category marketing manager at Weinerberger, said: "We are very pleased that Johnstone's Trade wanted to be involved with the first Weinerberger e4 brick house built in the UK. The products selected not only fit the environmental criteria within the e4, they also helped create the appealing indoor environment we wanted to achieve."
