More than 300 litres of Johnstone’s Trade paint has been used to give the World Heritage Village of Culross a 16th century makeover.

The former royal burgh was the subject of a comprehensive redecoration project to prepare it for its use as a filming location for the American TV series, Outlander, and the National Trust of Scotland commissioned Mackay Decorators for the job.

Johnstone’s Stormshield Pliolite Based Masonry Paint, which is known for its exceptional performance in areas exposed to inclement weather, was specified for the task of transforming the village back to how it would have looked in the 16th and 17th centuries, when it served as a port city on the Firth of Forth. The solvent-based paint has excellent adhesion and is specially designed for use in the low temperatures that often affect Culross.

‘Cherry pickers’ and scaffolding were used to access more than 20 historic properties in the village, which were given a coat of Pliolite Masonry Paint to give the buildings the tough, weather-resistant finish they required. Johnstone’s Smooth Metal Paint was also applied on exterior metalworks at the properties.

A team of six decorators spent two months on the unique decoration project, combining great attention to detail with knowledge of the local history of Culross to give the period properties an authentic makeover.

Following the filming period, Mackay returned to Culross to restore the village back to its contemporary scheme, using close to 500 litres of Johnstone’s Pliolite, as well as 20 litres of Oil Undercoat, 20 litres of Oil Gloss, and 20 litres of Smooth Metal Paint. The anti-corrosive properties of the Smooth Metal Paint were vital to the proper treatment of previously rusted surfaces, to protect them against the conditions in Culross.

Mark Nevin, director of Mackay Decorators, said: “The Culross refurbishment contract was an unusual project, but one that we were delighted to deliver on. The height of many of the buildings, combined with the weather conditions in Culross, made it far from straightforward. But, the dedication and attention to detail of our decorators, and the outstanding qualities of the Johnstone’s products that we used, led to a finish that we are very proud of.”
