Johnstone’s Trade has helped visitors to a popular North East museum take a step back in time after its products were used to refresh a full-size replica Roman bath house.

The Roman Bath House, the only full-scale reconstructed Roman bath house in the UK, was first built 20 years ago and has been a key attraction at the popular Segedunum museum in Wallsend ever since. One of the most excavated forts along Hadrian’s Wall, Segedunum attracts thousands of visitors each year and the bath house, which was built to the plan of similar Roman Bath houses discovered along Hadrian’s Wall at Chesters Fort and Vindolanda respectively, is always popular.

North Tyneside Council contracted the experienced team from Tynemouth Decorators to carry out the extensive internal and external redecoration as part of a refurbishment at the bath house. The team of six decorators, including one apprentice, spent five weeks repainting the entire building, including all external walls and the main changing areas as well as all the shutters and doors, using Johnstone’s Trade products throughout.

For the exterior, Johnstone's Stormshield Pliolite Based Masonry Paint and Stormshield Smooth Masonry paint were used, both in Brilliant White. Ideally suited for cement rendering, rough cast, brick and concrete, Johnstone's Stormshield Pliolite Based Masonry provides a premium quality, smooth matt finish with excellent adhesion to previously painted and porous surfaces.

Johnstone’s Stormshield Smooth Masonry Paint also boasts a 15-year life expectancy, offering excellent weather and dirt resistance together with good anti-carbonation properties. Following the refurbishment, the Roman Bath House will remain in near perfect condition for years to come.

Throughout the interior, Johnstone’s Two Pack Water Based Epoxy Floor Paint, which is ideal to withstand the high level of footfall expected inside the Roman Bath House, was applied.

Stephen Hull, managing director at Tynemouth Decorators said: “This was a really interesting project to work on, especially with the added challenge of making a 20-year old building look like it had been there for two thousand years!

“Being in such an exposed position close to the River Tyne, the choice of product was vital to ensure the exterior paintwork would last for years to come, which is why we opted to use Johnstone’s Stormshield as I knew I could rely on these products to create a quality, long-lasting finish. North Tyneside Council were happy with the end result and I’m very proud of the whole team.”
