Leicester’s riverside railings are receiving a spring spruce up from a team of painting and decorating students using paint and materials donated by their local Johnstone’s Decorating Centre.
A group of 10 students from South Leicestershire College have answered the call from Leicester City Council to paint the railings along the stretch of the River Soar that passes through the centre of Leicester, known as the 'Mile Straight'. The task, as well as improving the look of the local area, will also help the college students fulfil their course requirement to paint exterior metalwork.
Staff from Johnstone’s Decorating Centre on Hinckley Road in Leicester got involved in the project by donating all the paint needed as well as the brushes, tools and specialist personal protective equipment for the students. Johnstone’s Professional Undercoat and Professional Gloss were recommended for the job as together they offer excellent adhesion qualities, toughness, and durability.
The work is being carried out ahead of Leicester Rowing Club’s annual regatta, in which boat teams from around the country head to the Mile Straight to race.
Councillor Sarah Russell of Westcotes ward said: “This is a great chance for these college students to make a real positive difference in our community, while also getting the experience and skills they need as part of their course. The railings haven’t been painted for many years, and are really in need of a bit of a spruce up, so this work will be very well received locally.
“We’ve made some ward community funds available to be able to provide site cabins, and it’s fantastic that Johnstone’s Decorating Centre was able to donate the necessary equipment as well as all the paint needed, making it a real local effort which will really help the look of the area.”
Gina Laycock, marketing manager for Johnstone’s Decorating Centres, said: “We’re delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile community initiative.
“We have always put a great deal of emphasis on supporting the next generation of professional decorators, as well as the local communities in which we operate, and the fact that this project benefits both made it an easy decision for us. We can’t wait to see the transformation of the area!”
