Country Soil: Colour of the Year 2027

Grounded by Nature. Designed for Tomorrow.
As our world becomes increasingly fast-paced and digitally connected, there is a growing desire for spaces that help us feel more grounded, connected and at ease.
Country Soil (PPG15-30) is a warm, saturated neutral that blends beige, taupe and grey with rich earthy undertones. Inspired by clay-rich landscapes and weathered stone, it creates a sense of warmth, stability and authenticity that resonates across contemporary interiors.
Balancing comfort with sophistication, Country Soil creates a versatile foundation for spaces designed around wellbeing, belonging and lasting appeal. Its natural depth allows it to feel equally at home within modern architectural schemes and more traditional settings, making it a colour that transcends short-lived trends.
Why Country Soil Was Chosen
Since 2013, colour experts from PPG, the global coatings company behind Johnstone's Trade, have gathered annually to analyse the societal, cultural and design influences shaping colour preferences across architecture, consumer products and industrial design.
For 2027, this research identified a shift towards colours that support calm, comfort and authenticity. As the pace of modern life continues to accelerate, designers are increasingly creating spaces that feel restorative, reassuring and connected to the natural world.
Country Soil was selected as the Johnstone's Trade Colour of the Year 2027 because it reflects this evolving design landscape. Grounded and enduring, it provides a versatile foundation for contemporary interiors while responding to a growing desire for environments that foster wellbeing, belonging and connection.
"Country Soil is designed for slowing down. For 2027, we selected a grounding colour that acts as a solid foundation for any project. Inspired by the warm natural hues of clay, it helps create environments that feel settled, welcoming and restorative."

The Inspiration Behind Country Soil
The colours we choose shape the way spaces feel. They influence our perception of comfort, atmosphere and connection.
Country Soil draws inspiration from the landscapes beneath our feet. Reflecting the richness of natural earth, weathered clay and organic materials, it celebrates a growing appreciation for authenticity in both architecture and interior design.
As designers increasingly seek to create environments that feel meaningful and enduring, colours inspired by nature are playing a more significant role than ever before. Country Soil answers this need with a grounded, earthy tone that feels reassuring, familiar and timeless.
More than simply a colour trend, it reflects a broader movement towards creating spaces that support wellbeing, encourage connection and foster a stronger relationship with the natural world.
Designing with Country Soil
Country Soil is a versatile, nature-inspired neutral that brings warmth, depth and authenticity to a space. Its rich earthy undertones create welcoming interiors that feel grounded and connected to the natural world, while its balanced character allows it to work effortlessly across education, healthcare, workplace, hospitality and residential environments. Whether used as a feature colour or throughout an entire scheme, Country Soil pairs seamlessly with timber, stone, textured finishes, muted greens, soft greys and warm metallic accents. With a low light reflectance value (LRV), it gently diffuses light to create a softer, more enveloping atmosphere, making it particularly suited to spaces designed around comfort, wellbeing and lasting appeal.

Country Soil in Commercial Interiors
Country Soil's versatility makes it suitable for a broad range of commercial and residential projects.
In workplace environments, it helps create calming, welcoming spaces that encourage focus and collaboration. Within education settings, its natural warmth supports comfortable learning environments, while in healthcare spaces it contributes to interiors designed around reassurance and wellbeing.
Hospitality environments benefit from its richness and depth, creating spaces that feel inviting and memorable. For residential projects, Country Soil offers a timeless foundation that sits comfortably alongside both contemporary and traditional design schemes.
Its ability to complement natural materials, layered textures and sustainable design approaches makes it particularly relevant for today's architecture and interior design projects.
